I was born in London but big changes come my way when my parents moved back to their family roots in Dornoch and my love of the sea evolved. And when I say I love the sea I mean it - it’s part of my daily life. I see and hear the breaking waves from my window. I smell the salty air. I walk my dog Harris every day on the miles of sands. I hear the seagulls fighting for food. No wonder I paint the sea.
I began my painting journey several years ago. It was a long process of experimenting with medium and technique and digging deep into what I wanted to say as an artist. My style and creativity is evolving and developing and I’m finding my artistic voice heading towards creating sea foam and spume. Inspiration is all around me - the breaking waves, changing tides, splashes, stormy seas, rock pools. What intrigues me is the unmoving rocks that can disappear and then reappear in a changing tide. I work in hope, experiments and possible accidents. The whole process excites me and connects in what I see and feel. I would like you to feel you are transported into my paintings... imagine what it’s like to be surrounded by nature's energy. If I can evoke any of your emotions, then that makes me smile.
My favourite seascape artists are other Scottish women; Beth Robertson Fiddes, Fee Dickson Reid and Frances Macdonald, I can’t help but be inspired by their outstanding works, as well as my environment.
