Shovelling the ash from the smokebox was one of the less savory tasks at a steam depot. The locomotive depicted here is 23-035, a class 23 passenger type which was the final and most modern design built for the Deutche Bundesbahn in the 1950's. The last were retired from Crailsheim Depot in 1976 and several have been preserved. This painting is based on an original transparency in our collection.
